Never the quitter, Domenico opened another store in 1852 and officially incorporated the company! The business would go on to be the oldest chocolate company currently operating here in the US. Sadly, both stores were burnt to the ground shortly after one another, leaving the business owner to start again. He opened his first store over in Stockton and a second one in San Francisco.

It was a success! However, in 1849, the entrepreneur heard of the Gold Rush over in the United States and determined to move to California. At that time, he moved first to Uruguay and then to Peru, opening up his own store dedicated to delicacies.

It is way back in the 1800s that the story of Ghirardelli in San Francisco begins! Domenico Ghirardelli, a talented chocolatier hailing from Italy, studied the art of Italian candy making until the age of 20.
